Facilities
The First Apartments is a non-profit residence for adults, 62 and older. It was built in cooperation with the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Occupancy is open to all persons regardless of race, religion, sex, or national origin.
Situated on landscaped grounds in a west Topeka, KS residential neighborhood, our seven-story community has studio and one-bedroom apartments designed for the maximum comfort of residents. Each apartment contains carpeting, tile or vinyl, blinds, individually controlled heating/air conditioning, kitchens complete with a range and refrigerator. Apartments are all electric. A storage locker is available with each apartment.
A solarium, with a large sliding glass door leading to a balcony, complements each floor. Also available is a first floor laundry facility with coin-operated washers and dryers, and a beauty salon.
Parking is provided in our large, well-lighted lot with security cameras.
Security
Maintaining security and safety of the residents is a major goal of the staff and management of The First Apartments. Emergency pull-chords and a telephone-intercom system to our main entrance are included in every apartment. Entrance doors to the building remain locked at all times. Smoke detectors are located in each apartment and throughout the building. Security cameras are located in the main floor lobby, meeting rooms and stairwell.
Activities
Our large activity room is used for a congregate noon meal through Meals on Wheels, coffees, birthday dinners, exercise classes, a health department nail clinic, entertainment, educational programs, card games and billiards. A selection of fitness equipment is available for resident use.
Visits every other week by the Topeka/Shawnee County Public Library enable residents to keep current on their reading and check out movies.
Pets
One small pet (15 pounds or less) is allowed. Cats and dogs are required to have current vaccinations, a flea control program and registered with the City of Topeka.
Transportation
Topeka Transit buses stop at our main entrance giving residents access to the downtown area, Wal-Mart and other parts of the city.
Cost
The First Apartments provides a home to adults 62 and older with modest incomes. No entry fees are charged. Reasonable monthly rent includes utility and maintenance costs. Residents are responsible for your phone and cable TV and/or internet.
Rent subsidy is available for qualified applicants.
Application
Application for residency at The First Apartments can be made at the office, just inside the main entrance. Office hours are from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. You can also download an application from this website and mail it to the address at the upper left of this page. Call to schedule a tour.
Income is considered when determining rents with Federal rent subsidy. A damage deposit equal to one month’s rent is required. A pet deposit equal to ½ the monthly rent is required. The deposit is refundable when the apartment is vacated, if it is clean and undamaged.
Initial lease period is for one year.
